Abstract

Determinants of Financial Inclusion in the Digital Era: Knowledge, Gender, and Socioeconomic Factors in Mexico (ENIF 2024)

The objective of this study is to propose a financial inclusion index (FII) for Mexico and analyze its determinants based on data from the 2024 ENIF survey. The index was constructed using Principal Component Analysis (PCA). To estimate the determinants, a generalized linear model (GLM) with a Poisson distribution and a logarithmic link function was developed, adjusting the variance scale for the presence of moderate overdispersion. The results show that being female significantly reduces the FII, while financial literacy, institutional trust, digital connectivity, educational attainment, employment, wealth, and urban residence increase it. The findings can contribute to the design of public policies that integrate financial literacy, complemented by institutional transparency and digital infrastructure, and continuously monitor technological innovations. The contribution lies in the proposal of an IIF for Mexico, integrating PCA and GLM with overdispersion correction. To advance levels of financial inclusion, it is necessary to expand knowledge in this area and take actions to increase women’s participation in the formal financial system.
